Spetses

What to do in Spetses

The honest answer is that Spetses is a place to walk, swim, eat and look at buildings, and that this is either exactly what you want or nowhere near enough. The town is the main event: pebble mosaics, cannons on the waterfront, shipowners' mansions from the great era of Spetsiot trade, the belle epoque hotel that still sets the tone of the harbour, and Bouboulina's house, which is the best hour of history on the island. Beyond the town there is the old harbour where wooden hulls are still built, the pine-covered interior to cycle or ride through, and a string of small pebble coves to swim from, reached on two wheels or by water taxi. You will be bored here if you came for a big sandy resort, a beach club or a nightclub. The evenings are bars and long dinners. If that is the wrong shape of holiday, keep going south.
