Temple of Zeus Hellanios
An archaeological site in the interior of Aegina, near Pachia Rachi, where a 13th-century Byzantine church was built on top of the ancient temple of Zeus Hellanios. The staircase, walls and ashlar blocks of the classical sanctuary survive.
Near the village of Pachia Rachi lie the remains of the ancient sanctuary of Zeus Hellanios, one of the oldest cults on Aegina. A small Byzantine church was built over its ruins in the 13th century.
Of the classical temple, dated to around the 4th century BC, part of the walls, scattered ashlar blocks and the access staircase still survive. The site mixes archaeology with landscape, and there are good views inland across the island.
It is an interesting visit if you have already seen Aphaia and want to see a lesser-known corner of Aegina, one tied both to ancient religion and to the Byzantine continuity of the place.
